Any machine operating above 5 kV has the potential to produce x-rays, and is part of the GT Radiation Safety Program.

Radioactive Material Safety

The Georgia Institute of Technology's Broad Scope License, issued by the GA State DNR, allows for a wide range of radioactive material to be used for research purposes. Full time faculty and staff must apply to become Authorized Users to use or possess radioactive material in any form by submitting a Form A application. The Form A will be reviewed by the Institute Radiation Safety Committee, which meets quarterly. The RSO is available for consultation in completing the Form A and recommending best practices for obtaining Georgia Tech's ALARA policy. The following steps must be followed to obtain Authorized User status:

  1. Read and familiarize yourself with the Georgia Tech Radiation Safety Policy Manual and Procedure 9501, Control and Accountability of Radioactive Material.
  2. File a Form A (Application for Authorized User (AU) Status for Acquisition and Use of Radioactive Material) with the RSO.
  3. File a Form B (Radiation Worker Registration Form) with ORS for each person that will use radioactive material.
  4. Attend the 3-hour radioactive materials safety training as well as a 1-hour Hands-On training provided by ORS.

Completion of Radioactive Material Safety Training by the Authorized User is a prerequisite for Form A approval. This approval is limited to the specific isotope, possession limit, specific lab location and the authorized procedure stated in the Form A. A signed AU responsibility page is required with Form A submission.

The ORS staff must complete an inspection of the approved RAM location before any isotopes can be ordered or stored. If an AU wishes to deactivate his approval or is leaving Georgia Tech for an extended period of time, all radioactive material in his/her possession must be transferred to ORS or another AU authorized for the material.

The Form A's are approved for a period of five years and must be renewed at the end of the authorization period.
