ALARA stands for As Low As Reasonably Achievable, and applies to the radiation dose that people receive.

X-Ray Safety

The use of machines which produce ionizing radiation (X-rays in particular) are necessary to carry out the research and teaching responsibilities of Georgia Tech. Policies and procedures for the registration, acquisition, use, operation and accountability of this equipment have been established by the Radiation Safety Officer and the Institute Radiation Safety Committee for the following purposes:

  • To provide for the protection of the Georgia Tech population and the general public against radiation hazards associated with Tech's use of machines and equipment that emit X-rays.
  • To provide for Georgia Tech's compliance with applicable State and Federal regulations.

To obtain authorization to acquire and use a machine that emits X-rays, the following steps must be followed:

  1. Contact the RSO for a consultation about the type of x-ray generating device, use location and to determine if additional lead shielding is required to reach Georgia Tech's ALARA policy.
  2. Read and familiarize yourself with the Georgia Tech Radiation Safety Policy Manual and Procedure 9502, Control and Accountability of Radiation Generating Equipment.
  3. File a Form A (Application for Authorized User (AU) Status for Acquisition and Use of Radiation Producing Equipment) with the RSO.
  4. File a Form B (Radiation Worker Registration Form) with ORS for each person that will operate the x-ray equipment.
  5. Attend the 2-hour X-ray radiation safety training provided by ORS.
  6. File a Form C (Certification of Authorization for Acquisition of Radiation Producing Equipment) with the RSO.

Form A applications will be reviewed by the Institute Radiation Safety Committee at their quarterly meetings. The Form A's are approved for a period of five years and must be renewed at the end of the authorization period.

X-Ray units will be inspected upon initial installation and then annually by the ORS. All x-ray units will be registered with the GA State Department of Human Resources by the ORS.
